Superfluous tattoos

I'm happy tattoos are enjoying a resurgence. I've seen some gorgeous tattoos and some hideous ones. I join in the opinion that tattoos should have some sort of meaning, at least to the person who went through the pain to have it permanently adhered to his or her skin.

However... my pet peeve is superfluous tattoos. If you have to label yourself either a) everyone knows it anyway, so I'm not sure why you have to mention it or b) it's not true.

Case in point for option b. Wearing Wranglers at a country music festival does not a cowboy make.
